CAP Ventures/InfoTrends Releases Landmark Multi-Client Study Entitled Photo Printing in the Home: A European Perspective

(Weymouth, MA) March 30, 2004…CAP Ventures and InfoTrends Research Group announced the availability of its latest multi-client study entitled Photo Printing in the Home: A European Perspective. This landmark study outlines the key opportunities and threats for companies in the digital photography and photo printing market space.

The research covers all aspects of the photo printing market, including technology, consumables, and consumer experience. By examining the size of the digital photography market, technology trends, and end-user inputs, CAP Ventures/InfoTrends outlines the key opportunities for all players in the market, whether established or new. Key findings from this study include:

  • Home printing is growing; 82% of respondents say that they are printing more now than they were a year ago.
  • The majority of survey respondents reported printing more than 10% of their photos; companies still need to work on stimulating consumers to increase their printing volume.
  • Despite the growth of printers that have photo-printing capabilities, most of the paper that is used in these devices is uncoated.
  • About half of our survey participants ranked high print quality as the most desirable aspect of a home printer. 22% of respondents said that price was the most important factor.

“Three key factors affecting home printing volume are consumers’ confidence in the technology, convenience of the location, and the perception that printing is very costly,” commented Catherine Charlery, Group Director at CAP Ventures. “There is clearly some confusion about the cost of printing, and vendors must seize the opportunity to help consumers understand the benefits of this medium.”

The study provides a Road Map for vendors currently in the photo printing space, as well as for newcomers seeking to capitalise on the changes in the market. The study assists businesses in:

  • Evaluating the current size of the digital camera, photo printing, and photo paper markets in Europe
  • Segmenting the markets by key customer and product attributes
  • Understanding photo print usage trends, consumer behaviour, and output preferences
  • Identifying key barriers and enablers for consumer digital photo printing
  • Assessing current market penetration, market share, and brand preference

The study also contains 5-year market forecasts for digital cameras, camera phones, photo printers, and consumables for Western Europe.
