Photo Printing in the Home: A European Perspective

# Pages: 98

Publication Date: March 2004

Introduction

Until now, photo printing has been an analogue process, and this fostered a mature and closed industry. After more than 50 years of relative stability, all the rules are beginning to change due to digital photography and digital printing. Nearly everyone is impacted. Users have new choices, such as printing at home, printing at kiosks or minilabs, printing online, or not printing at all. Print technologies such as inkjet and dye sub are competing with silver halide, as are new media and consumables.

This groundbreaking study outlines the key opportunities for companies that touch the photo printing space, and the threats to those who have operated largely uninterrupted in a closed industry for over 50 years.

Key Findings

  • Home printing is growing; 82% of respondents say that they are printing more now than they were a year ago.
  • The majority of survey respondents reported printing more than 10% of their
photos; companies still need to work on stimulating consumers to increase their
    printing volume.
  • Despite the growth of printers that have photo-printing capabilities, most of the paper that is used in these devices is uncoated.
  • About half of our survey participants ranked high print quality as the most
desirable aspect of a home printer. 22% of respondents said that price was the
    most important factor.
