InfoTrends' State-of-the-Market Address
This big-picture session examines where we are and what to expect in 2006. Culling data from our latest end-user studies and forecasts, it will provide a snapshot of the market size, opportunities, and threats in photo capture, usage trends, photo sharing, printing, storage, and convergence with personal content.

Rapid growth in digital photography is slowing, but there are new market opportunities emerging for 2006. Many questions remain. How much will people print? Will they invest in photo archival? Will photos merge with music and video in personal content solutions? We’ll cover what’s going on in the market today, with an eye toward giving attendees a chance to assess where their opportunities lie in the future.

Speaker:
Kristy Holch, Group Director, InfoTrends

8:30 AM
Keynote – Expanding Links in the New Digital Imaging Chain
The consumer digital image capture space is changing rapidly, with the number of alternatives for consumers exploding through feature-loaded digital still cameras and ever-improving camera phones. Meanwhile, the options for storing, sharing, displaying and, most importantly, printing images continue to multiply as technology leaders find new ways to improve the end-to-end user experience. This session builds upon last year’s keynote discussion, which focused largely on the rapid adoption of digital photography. This year, our thought leaders articulate their views about future growth opportunities for the industry as the market moves towards the late majority stage. These thought leaders will also consider how ease-of-use factors into the equation, and whether that will give some digital photography solutions a competitive advantage over others.

Moderator:
Kristy Holch, Group Director, InfoTrends/CAP Ventures

Speakers:
Pradeep Jotwani, Senior Vice President, Imaging and Printing Group, HP
Pierre Schaeffer, Director of Business Strategy & Marketing Services, Kodak

Digital Still Cameras vs. Camera Phones – How Will the Two Co-Exist?
While the digital camera market is slowing in North America, new segments of the market such as consumer DSLRs are generating renewed excitement. Imaging Interoperability Between CE Devices – How Do We Get There?

Sure, all devices play JPGs but transferring collections of photos from device to device often means losing the "metadata" that was painstakingly entered by the consumer. Join a panel of industry leaders for a roundtable discussion about what companies and organizations are doing about imaging interoperability.

They'll respond to key questions, such as:

Do consumers care or need better interoperability?
How will interoperability affect consumers' behavior while using digital images?
Will cell phone imaging drive the need for easier and better exchange of images & metadata?

Emerging Opportunities in the Pro Photography and Advanced Hobbyist Segments

As the professional photography business moves to one that is fully digital, vendors and service providers have the opportunity to displace traditional processes (including capturing, editing, printing, and workflow management) and create new revenue streams. Additionally, as technology improves and price points come down, there is a growing base of hobbyists that are likely to adopt new cameras and generate additional prints. This session explores how quickly the various segments are likely to evolve, what their requirements might be, and the impact that software, services and Web-based solutions might have. It will cover:

  • Pro photographers’ use of technology and services
  • Where to look for new revenue and improved margins
  • Use of channels
  • How great is the print opportunity?
  • How quickly will this market evolve?

Content in the Home: Digital Photos Swept into the Stream

Digital technology has completely changed the content equation for consumers and vendors alike. The old models of passive consumption of content from standalone electronic boxes are rapidly evaporating as the ability to acquire, store, and distribute content over a media network has emerged, creating new opportunities for hardware and content vendors. The impact of devices such as Media Center PCs, multi-room PVRs, Wi-Fi image capture devices, media servers, and portable media players on traditional viewing models will be nothing short of revolutionary. Not only will premium content from service providers need to be managed, but personal content from digital cameras and video camcorders will flow over these networks, creating a need for management of this content and an opportunity to monetize it for hardware and service providers. This session will analyze:

  • Imaging in the digital home - How will it evolve and what role will photos play in the networked home?
  • Media servers - which will be the primary device for centralized content?
  • Networked consumer electronics devices – will everything be a node on the network
  • Opportunities for imaging and consumer electronics vendors in this market

Online Photo Sharing and Photo Storage Solutions – Meeting Customers’ Short- and Long-Term Needs
Consumers are seeking simple ways to efficiently share and organize their digital photos. Online photo service vendors are uniquely positioned to help consumers do just this by incorporating more full-featured services to their online offerings, enabling consumers to do more with their digital photos at a single destination. At the same time, however, it remains to be seen which features, if any, consumers will be willing to pay for. In this session, hear from the vendors that are beginning to expand their value propositions – and revenue streams – beyond printing, on their way to becoming marketers of complete digital photo management and photo sharing tools. This session takes a look at how vendors are implementing more sophisticated photo organization and sharing features. What types of services should be offered free of charge, and which might be made available for a fee? Will online solutions become key to preserving the digital image so families can enjoy their images years from now
