(Weymouth, MA) December 15, 2008 . . . Today’s Print Service Providers are continually working to reduce their production costs while also working to increase productivity. In response, both digital and offset printing equipment vendors constantly emphasize the efficiency of their respective technologies. While all agree that digital technology is clearly less expensive for short runs, there is less agreement on where the actual crossover points lie. To deliver insight into this topic InfoTrends has released a report entitled The Cost of Color Print Revisited. This report serves as a follow up to an InfoTrends study commissioned by HP originally in 2006 that explored the cost of color printing. That analysis provided objective information on the economic crossover between the HP Indigo 5500 Digital Press and offset presses. With the introduction of the HP Indigo 7000 Digital Press and its increased speed and lower running costs, the time is right to re-examine how the crossover points have changed since 2006. The Cost of Color Print Revisited examines the cost of four-color printing and compares the HP Indigo 7000 Digital Press to a typical 19” x 25” offset press. This analysis also offers calculations on the print run length crossover point between offset and digital for a representative market basket of jobs as well as the comparable run times for the jobs. Applications accounted for include:
This report also includes recent InfoTrends research about the trend toward shorter run lengths.
