New InfoTrends Report Reveals Essential Features of Digital Photo Frames

(Weymouth, MA) November 14, 2008 . . . According to a new report from InfoTrends entitled Digital Photo Frames: A Bright Spot in the Consumer Imaging Market, the digital photo frame segment presents a fresh avenue for vendors seeking new opportunities for growth. While some segments of the digital imaging space are approaching maturity, the digital photo frame market is projected to achieve a compound annual growth rate of nearly 22% from 2008-2013, surpassing 21 million units.

Consumers are embracing digital photo frames because they give them the ability to free digital images from storage devices and bring them into their everyday lives. Other devices (e.g., TVs or PCs) can be used for photo viewing, but the photos usually remain on the storage device and are not viewed again.

InfoTrends’ research indicates that vendors seeking to gain share in this growing market should focus on introducing products that foster ease of use in updating frames to enable consumers to display their latest and greatest photos as effortlessly as possible. First and foremost, wireless is a must-have feature moving forward for this market to reach its full potential. Just over 15% of all digital photo frames shipped are wireless at this time, but this percentage is expected to jump to almost 35% by 2012.

Nevertheless, InfoTrends’ Senior Research Analyst Carrie Sylvester cautioned, “While it will be important for vendors to offer wireless products to capture the higher end of the market, less tech-savvy users will be happy to rely on memory cards to feed their frames. Therefore, wired frames will continue to present a healthy opportunity for manufacturers in the low-end market and we expect wired frames to remain an important component of the digital photo frame market for some time to come.”

In addition to focusing on ease of use, research indicates that vendors would also be wise to introduce frames that are capable of receiving user-defined RSS feeds, connection to social networking, and local news and weather updates through a content service provider. This would further integrate digital photo frames into consumers’ everyday lives, giving them a purpose beyond photo viewing. Sylvester commented, “While there is a broad array of features that vendors could potentially incorporate into frames, the key to success in this market is determining which features will add the most value and address consumer needs. The addition of user-driven content is paramount to making the digital photo frame a serious part of a connected experience.”

In addition to exploring the features that will lead to increased adoption, Digital Photo Frames: A Bright Spot in the Consumer Imaging Market addresses the current state of the digital photo frame market, considers ownership and use, and provides a forecast for the future.
