(Weymouth, MA) October 09, 2008 . . . A recent InfoTrends study on the Western European consumer digital camera market has revealed that the consumer digital single lens reflex camera (DSLR) segment is experiencing significant growth, contributing substantially to the overall digital camera market. Unit sales grew by 41% from 2006 to 2007 to reach 2.5 million units. Continued growth is expected through 2013, when unit sales are projected to exceed 3 million. This growth is being driven by the availability of a number of competitively priced DSLR models. These lower-priced models are enabling point & shoot owners to upgrade their cameras to DSLRs. Although sales of DSLRs are growing rapidly, P&S cameras will represent the vast majority of all digital camera sales until 2013. Therefore, InfoTrends expects that vendors in the P&S market will continue to invest in developing new technologies as well as targeted marketing strategies. Another notable fact revealed by the study is that megapixel count continues to be one of the most important influencers when consumers make a purchase decision. InfoTrends’ end-user surveys show that pixels and price are the two primary considerations when purchasing a digital camera. InfoTrends Director Mette Eriksen commented, “While consumers who have a deeper understanding of features other than pixels will look beyond pixels to judge the quality of the camera, most consumers will seek cameras with higher pixel counts.” InfoTrends’ Western European Consumer Digital Camera Forecast: 2007-2013 provides a five-year forecast for Western Europe in terms of units, revenues, and average selling prices for the consumer (sub-€1,500) digital camera market.
