(Weymouth, MA) September 04, 2008 . . . According to the results of InfoTrends’ latest U.S. cut size paper survey, the percentage of paper with 10 – 30% postconsumer content has been growing steadily over the past seven years. This segment reached 655,000 tons in 2007 and represented 12% of all cut size tons last year. What’s more, for the first time ever, the survey registered data on cut size papers containing between 31% - 100% postconsumer content that was significant enough to be reflected in the results. This segment totaled 112,000 tons in 2007 and accounted for 2% of all cut size tons. InfoTrends Associate Director David Pineault commented, “The papermaking manufacturing process is one of the more scrutinized aspects of the forest products industry. From tree stump to final disposal, regulators, legislators, activists, and now the general public and large corporations have a vested interest in how paper companies source raw materials and bring product to market. Paper manufacturers are responding to this pressure by studying this issue and implementing measures that reduce the negative impact of paper consumption on the environment, and the results of this study reflect the changes that these businesses are making.” In addition to revealing cut size data related to recycled content, this study includes data pertaining to grade, brightness, basis weight, brand, sheet size, packaging, and sales channel. InfoTrends conducts this survey annually to assess U.S. cut size paper production, product ranges, and other key metrics. The survey participants are U.S.-based companies that produce cut size papers for the domestic and international markets for the home, office, and production print segments. The survey has evolved into a useful analytical tool by which the survey participants can gauge industry trends and measure their own market share across several data categories. With all the industry consolidation and product rationalization that has occurred over the past several years, the information collected in the survey has become a beneficial diagnostic tool for the U.S. cut size paper industry.
