(Weymouth, MA) July 30, 2008 . . .According to a comprehensive new survey report on consumer video habits from InfoTrends, age had a dramatic effect on willingness to purchase a camcorder in the future among those respondents that do not currently own one. While less than a quarter of all respondents in this group indicated plans to purchase a camcorder, nearly half of those under age 25 reported plans to purchase one. Respondents under age 25 also reported using their camcorders more often than the other age segments. More than a third of respondents in this group reported weekly camcorder use. Videos have become a part of younger consumers’ everyday lifestyle; social networking is important for the so-called “MySpace Generation,” so these individuals are also more likely to capture, upload, and share photos and videos with their peers. Mette Eriksen, Director of InfoTrends’ Digital Photography Trends Service, commented, “Video clearly plays a major role in the lifestyles of these young people, so camcorder and point and shoot camera vendors should certainly keep this sub-segment at the forefront of their minds when developing new products. They would also be wise to develop marketing schemes that are specifically geared toward this age group.” The survey also found that point and shoot cameras are the most commonly used device for shooting video. More respondents reported owning a P&S camera than a camcorder, and a significant percentage of all P&S camera owners shoot video at least a few times a year. Camera phones are also becoming a more important source of video clips. More than half of camera phone owners report that they have shot video using their camera phone. InfoTrends’ highly informative new report entitled Video End-User Research: 2008 provides an in-depth analysis of the results from InfoTrends’ 2008 Video End-User Survey, which was conducted in May. This survey questioned consumers about their videography habits when using camera phones, digital camcorders, and digital cameras. It includes sections on capturing video clips on camera phones, camcorder usage and video activities, capturing still photos via camcorder, camcorder features and accessories, future purchasing intentions, and shooting video clips on digital cameras. This report delivers valuable insight into the changes that are shaping this market.
