According to a new report from InfoTrends entitled Demand Drivers for Printing Paper, the future of print in emerging markets such as the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) will be driven by population growth (particularly in urban areas), rising household incomes, the development of a consumer class, and the further deregulation of print media delivery vehicles. One off-shoot to these macro-trends will be rapid growth in advertising expenditures as retailers attempt to lure consumers to use their brands, products, and services. Paper consumption will also receive a boost from the general rise in business activity and the accompanying increase in transactional and business communications documents. Paper usage is forecasted to rise slightly faster than overall GDP growth in these economies over the next 5 to 10 years due to a proliferation of transactional documents, direct mail, magazines, catalogs, and various business communications documents. Demand drivers in North America and Europe are quite different from those in emerging countries. In these regions, paper use is being driven by new applications and technologies, some of which include TransPromo documents, production color inkjet devices, and hybrid technology. Rapid transformation of the graphic arts industry is also affecting the printing industry. According to David Pineault, an Associate Director at InfoTrends, “The digitization of print has drastically changed manufacturing and customer expectations by enabling shorter run lengths, leaner supply chains, personalized print, shorter turnaround, higher levels of complexity, increased use of color, and higher levels of transparency. The print industry of the future will be characterized by a migration of the document back to the enterprise and will feature highly personalized color content. Print service providers will continue to consolidate and offer a broader range of services in more diverse geographical markets.” Demand Drivers for Printing Paper provides an assessment of the principal mega trends and demand drivers in the printing industry, such as those referenced above, over the medium term. It discusses the factors affecting the demand for print as well as major technological innovations that will occur in the print industry over the next several years in mature as well as emerging markets.
