Technological Developments Contributing to Growth in Wide Format Aqueous Inkjet Market

The worldwide wide format aqueous inkjet market is a large and complex market comprised of three primary market segments. These three segments (i.e., technical, creative, and production graphics) comprise a hardware, ink, and media market that was valued at more than $4.75 billion on a worldwide basis in 2007, which is expected to grow to $5.98 billion by 2012. InfoTrends believes that because aqueous inkjet is the most flexible wide format print technology, unit shipments will continue to grow over the forecast period. This is especially true in the technical and production graphics markets, where considerable technological developments are being targeted because these represent the greatest opportunities in terms of print volumes.

In terms of new products and technologies, the wide format aqueous inkjet market continued to evolve in 2007 and the first half of 2008 as the leading hardware suppliers have all launched new printers with advanced features, improved capabilities, and lower prices. These range from new software that enables the printers to produce twice as fast as previous versions using the same printheads to an integrated spectrophotometer that speeds up the time required to create color profiles. In addition, a whole new ink technology platform has been introduced in the last 12 months (durable aqueous inkjet) that promises the outdoor durability and running cost of eco-solvent, but with no environmental limitations. These new technologies prove that vendors are adding valuable new features and capabilities that InfoTrends believes will drive continued growth in the aqueous inkjet market.
