Introduction The inkjet industry has undergone significant changes over the last five years, including consolidation, price and margin erosion, and the proliferation of aftermarket pirates. While brand loyalty has waned and inkjet technology is largely viewed as a commodity rather than a high-tech purchase, there are several positives that point to potential growth opportunities. InfoTrends’ new forecast, Inkjet Applications in Corrugated Packaging: 2005-2010, discusses the corrugated packaging market in detail while also projecting the growing use of inkjet through 2010. The report examines driving factors for the need to use inkjet technology, applications that are leading this demand, operating environments and system requirements, critical success factors, risk factors, and size and timing of the opportunity. Dynamic Inkjet Growth Projected According to the new forecast, the use of inkjet technology in the corrugated package printing market is expected to dramatically increase over the next five years. Overall revenues from inkjet-based systems used in corrugated packaging are expected to rise from just $3.25 billion in 2005 to more than $5.9 billion in 2010. Within this overall market, non case-coding applications are driving growth. Figure 1: Inkjet System (Hardware/Printhead/Ink) Revenue from non case-coding applications, including proofing, converting, in-line packaging, post packaging, and point-of-purchase, is expected to climb from $72 million in 2005 to more than $4.1 billion by 2010, representing a 97% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). The demand for variable data in the packaging market, combined with the emergence of more cost-effective digital printing technologies, has created ideal conditions for fast adoption of inkjet in a variety of packaging environments. Suppliers outside the traditional packaging market, including digital and wide format system manufacturers, systems integrators, and inkjet system manufacturers, will bring advanced technology to the corrugated packaging market that will enable further rapid adoption of inkjet systems. Many vendors in these other areas have an eye on leveraging their technology in new markets. Packaging is of particular interest based on the size of the market.
