introduction China’s paper industry is the second-largest in the world, with its paper production and consumption exceeding that of Japan. The copier paper market segment in China is no exception. This segment is expected to grow through 2008 with sales reaching 790,000 tons, representing revenues of ¥7,141,000,000. To examine this dynamic region, InfoTrends/CAP Ventures announces the release of a new research report entitled China Copier Paper Market Report. This landmark study examines the copier paper industry for plain paper copiers in mainland China. The report provides market estimates for 2002 and 2003, as well as a forecast for 2004 through 2008. Research for the comprehensive report consisted of face-to-face interviews and telephone interviews conducted between May 2004 and July 2004.The research included interviews with 16 copier paper manufacturers in China along with branch offices, 22 major paper merchants, and 2 paper industry associations (Paper Manufacturer Association of China/Printing and Printing Equipment Industries Association of China). Extensive desk research was also conducted for this study. Market Sizing China’s copier paper market is expected to continue expanding through 2008. 234,000 tons of copier paper was sold during 2002, accounting for ¥2,140,000,000 in revenues. 294,000 tons were sold in 2003, representing a year-over-year growth of 25.8%. Total revenues were ¥2,679,000,000 in 2003, accounting for a year-over-year growth of 25.2%. Figure 1: Sales Growth in China’s Copier Paper Market, 2002-2008 (kilotons)
Such robust growth can be attributed to China’s soaring economy, which has brought about an information explosion and increased the need for papers. Because the installed base of output equipment such as copiers, printers, electrographic devices, and integrated multifunctional office machines is expanding rapidly, the Chinese copier paper market is expected to continue growing at a steady pace between 2002 and 2008. As mentioned above, sales within China’s copier paper market are directly related to regional economic situations. The consumption rate is very close to the share of GDP. HuaDong (Eastern China) currently has the highest market share with sales totaling about 103,300 tons, representing about 36% of the overall market in 2003. APP brand paper sold 54,000 tons of copier paper in this region during 2003, accounting for 52.2% of the overall market. Figure 2: Market Share by Region (Sales), 2003 HuaBei (Northern China) has the second-highest market share, having sold 65,600 tons of copier paper in 2003. This represented 22.3% of China’s overall volume. In this region, high-end copier paper brands with the highest sales volumes include Gold Flag Ship and Blue Flag Ship.
