Printer and MFP Market Placements Show Mixed Results in Central & Eastern Europe

(Weymouth, MA) June 29, 2011…The market for printers and multifunctional devices in Central & Eastern Europe (CEE) staged a recovery in 2010. Total market placements increased by approximately 26% from 6.3 million units in 2009 to 7.9 million in 2010.
Zac Butcher, Director of InfoTrends’ European Digital Peripherals Service advised, “Whilst this growth is a positive sign for the document equipment industry, indicating a region on the rebound, vendors and suppliers should take note when marketing their products in this region of the significant country level differences.”

InfoTrends Central & Eastern European Printer & MFP Placements covers 9 countries including Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Ukraine. All markets, with the exception of the Czech Republic, showed positive growth rates for device placements in 2010.

Russia accounts for the largest share of devices in the CEE region and exhibited a healthy growth rate of 37%, increasing from 3.1 million units in 2009 to 4.2 million units in 2010. As a commodities dependent economy, Russia benefited from increased oil prices during the period. InfoTrends research suggests that business confidence was higher in Russia than other parts of the region and this translated into device purchases during 2010. In a recent survey (Market Pulse: Central & Eastern Europe) 57% of Russian IT decision makers profiled indicated they had purchased a new printer or MFP in 2010. This was in contrast to 29% who said they last purchased in 2009.

Comparing Russia to the Czech Republic, where the market for devices declined by 464,000 units in 2010, it appears that business confidence is lower. In the same survey, only 36% of respondents indicated that they had purchased a device in 2010, whereas more than 54% indicated they had last purchased during 2008 or 2009. The primary reason given for making the new purchase was to replace an existing product that had broken in contrast to Russia where the primary reasons for purchase was business expansion or wanting a better device.

Butcher continued, “Each country is recovering from the economic downturn at different rates and based on their own economic strengths. Understanding where the market opportunities lie is critical to device vendor’s strategy development when positioning for future growth. InfoTrends combined market placements, forward looking forecasts, and end-user research programs provide the insight and advice vendors require for success in these markets.”
