Western European Consumer Digital Camera Market Requires Targeted Approach to Contrasting Segments

(Weymouth, MA; Luton, UK) November 04, 2010 . . . InfoTrends has just released its Western European Consumer Digital Camera Forecast for 2010 – 2015. The forecast offers total values for Western Europe as a whole as well as individual country sections for France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The market is expected to recover after taking a hit from the global economic meltdown, however growth through the forecast period will be modest.

There are a variety of factors affecting the make-up of this market. Improvements in ease of use and falling price points have encouraged mainstream consumers to purchase another digital camera, while technology advancements such as extreme wide-angle, ultra-extended zoom have driven repeat purchases among the more tech savvy users. The market consists of a diverse population of consumers, so it makes sense that there is no single driver that is dominating the market. Each of these consumer segments has different needs, making it imperative for vendors to stay on top of all of these trends and address the various market segments with targeted messages.

One such trend is the migration toward the connected experience. When digital cameras entered the market a decade ago, they were purely a replacement of film cameras. It is now necessary for them to become connected to other devices and the Internet.

Mette Eriksen, a Director at InfoTrends, commented, “Sharing images instantly with friends and family is becoming a more important aspect of photography. Smartphones currently provide this ability, but digital cameras generally do not. Consumers will soon come to expect that cameras will interface with any device that they use to store, share, manage, and print their photos. As connected devices become more widespread, cameras will need to become connected to compete.” Although connected digital cameras represent a tiny sub-set of the total digital camera market in 2010, InfoTrends believes that these are the products that will drive future growth.

In addition to examining market trends and barriers, this 5-year forecast includes data for unit shipments, year-end installed base, revenues, and average selling prices for Western Europe and the individual countries listed above. It also covers household penetration rates, first-time buyers versus replacement buyers, compact digital cameras versus digital interchangeable lens cameras, price segment, and vendor market share.
