InfoTrends’ 2010 U.S. Mobile Imaging End-User Survey Reveals Consumer Motivations


(Weymouth, MA) September 15, 2010 . . . InfoTrends has announced the release of its 2010 U.S. Mobile Imaging End-User Survey. The survey, which garnered over 2,000 qualified respondents, revealed some telling insights in areas ranging from handset feature preferences to mobile photo-related consumer activities. 

Standalone digital cameras are often shared by multiple family members and might only be carried during major photo-taking events like vacations, holidays, and birthdays. Camera phones, on the other hand, are personal devices that many consumers carry with them at all times. As such, they are ideal for spontaneous photo opportunities. Because consumers will be more likely to print and share these camera phone photos as long as the quality is acceptable, handset manufacturers should focus on developing camera phones with high resolution, reduced shutter lag, and anti-shake capabilities.

Carrie Sylvester, a Senior Research Analyst at InfoTrends, stated, “There is no doubt that consumers enjoy the spontaneity with which camera phones enable them to take photos. The ability to share these photos while in the moment via picture messages and other electronic means offers further motivation for mobile photography. Consumers in our survey indicated that in addition to higher image quality, the availability of more convenient sharing methods would incite them to share more of the photos they take with their handsets.”
