Young Adults Value New Digital Camera Features and Technologies

(Weymouth, MA) June 02, 2010 . . . InfoTrends has just released a new report in its Spotlight on Young Adults series. This report, Spotlight on Young Adults: Digital Cameras and Digital Photo Frames, reveals that although they typically have lower incomes than other population segments, young adults report shorter intervals between camera purchases, in the case of new purchases, replacement purchases, and additional purchases. In fact, young adults are more likely than others to report purchasing an additional or replacement camera “just for fun.”

Digital camera purchases made by young adults are fueled by this group’s strong interest in digital photography. When asked to approximate the number of digital camera photos they took over a typical three-month period, the young adults reported taking nearly a third more photos than the total population of digital camera owners. Many young adults are genuinely interested in photography, so they might be more willing to invest in a new camera even if their old one is still functioning.

Ed Lee, a Group Director at InfoTrends, commented, “Our survey results say that young adults are more likely to upgrade their cameras based on new features or technologies. Digital camera vendors would be well-advised to clearly outline the newest features and benefits of their cameras in their marketing efforts to capture the attention of this promising market segment.”

The results of this survey show that young adults have different attitudes, photography habits, and purchasing practices than their older counterparts. As a result, vendors must vary their strategy when targeting this demographic. This latest report in the Spotlight on Young Adults series provides the insights necessary to effectively reach these consumers. This report examines the digital photography habits of young adults, including digital camera ownership, usage, and applications. It also provides some insight on digital photo frame ownership. Where appropriate, the young adults’ responses are separated by gender and/or compared to those of the total survey population to further illuminate the differences between these groups.
