InfoTrends Examines the Future of Color Inkjet in Commercial Print

(Weymouth, MA) February 26, 2010…In a new report just released by InfoTrends, analysts examine the status and future of color inkjet technology in commercial printing. The report examines the current market, developments expected in the next few years, and what InfoTrends sees as the long term outlook for inkjet in commercial printing.

“Production level color inkjet today is mainly found in forms, books, direct mail, and TransPromo applications, with the most emphasis on variable printing,” commented Ralf Schlozer, a Director at InfoTrends. “We believe this will serve as a stepping stone for inkjet to play an even greater role in commercial print ultimately leading toward offset replacement.”

There are several factors that are shaping this transition. Recent technology developments have enabled the use of inkjet for commercial high-volume printing as a primary process. Developments in ink aim to lower cost, while broadening the substrate range and improving drying and light-fastness properties. These developments are complemented by advances in control electronics and data preparation for high-speed document generation. The main driver for inkjet in high-volume commercial print, however, is the introduction of page-wide inkjet arrays. Finally, the technology developments that make inkjet viable for very high-volume production printing bring down the costs per page noticeably, strengthening inkjet’s competitive position versus competing printing technologies.

“What we are seeing today is just the first generation that will steer inkjet into commercial print. There is too much money that has been and will be invested by too many companies for inkjet to fail. Inkjet will advance through the co-development of enabling products and processes with stakeholders, such as printing companies, substrate manufacturers, finishing system vendors, and even end-customers,” continued Schlozer.

InfoTrends’ report Inkjet in Commercial Print: A Map for the Coming Decade, describes the path that InfoTrends expects inkjet technology to take in the next ten years and beyond toward a much greater role in commercial printing. The report aims to answer these basic questions:

  • What are the main high-speed inkjet systems available now?
  • What recent developments are important indicators for the near future?
  • What commercial print applications will drive adoption of inkjet?
  • What barriers must ink vendors overcome first?
  • When will inkjet solutions start to displace analog presses?

In addition, InfoTrends has released a report entitled The Use of Inkjet for a B2-Format, Cut-Sheet, Production Color Printer. For a limited time, this report is being included as a complimentary offering with the purchase of Inkjet in Commercial Print: A Map for the Coming Decade. It is also available for purchase as a stand-alone product.
