Ease of Use and Connectivity Essential Features for Digital Photo Frame Market to Reach Full Potential

(Weymouth, MA) February 23, 2010 . . . InfoTrends is pleased to announce the release of its latest report on the digital photo frame market, entitled Digital Photo Frames – The Fourth Screen of our Digital Lives. This report offers good news for the digital imaging market, forecasting digital photo frame shipments to increase at a CAGR of over 21% over the next five years, surpassing 23 million units in 2014.

This research, which included surveys with consumers as well as digital photo frame vendors, revealed that ease of use in setting up and updating frames is a must moving forward. While the first purchasers of digital photo frames were early adopters, these devices are now increasingly falling into the hands of mainstream consumers or late adopters, who are opting to purchase these products themselves or are receiving them as gifts. If digital photo frames are not easy to set up and update, these consumers simply will not use them.

InfoTrends’ Senior Research Analyst Carrie Sylvester commented, “Market frustration comes through loud and clear in today’s product reviews and blogs—many digital photo frame owners do not understand why it is so difficult to update their photos, or to get their wireless frames to communicate with networks or PCs. Other consumers say that they used their photo frames all the time when they first got them, but now they are rarely turned on. Digital photo frames must be used if they are to become integral in consumers’ lives and frames are more likely to be used if they can be easily updated with new photos.”

One way to ensure that a frame is used daily and for more than viewing photos is to enable it to receive user-defined RSS feeds, connection to social networking, and local news and weather updates through a content service provider. A wireless/connected frame is required to receive RSS feeds. Whether the wireless capability is provided through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or something else, digital photo frames must be wireless to reach their full market potential.

Digital Photo Frames – The Fourth Screen of our Digital Lives further discusses this and other factors that could motivate consumers to purchase their first or additional digital photo frames. It details the current and future state of the digital photo frame market in North America, and reviews ownership and usage trends. This document covers market drivers and barriers, value-added features, forecast numbers, ownership and usage rates, and several vendor profiles. In addition, a model matrix is included with the report.
