InfoTrends Releases Study Examining Opportunities around Document Security

(Weymouth, MA) January 18, 2010 . . . InfoTrends has just released the results of an extensive new study investigating the opportunities around secured office printing and document workflow. This research bodes well for providers of secure printing technologies, as 40% of InfoTrends’ survey respondents that have not implemented document security features expect to consider doing so in the next two years, and an even larger portion of respondents that have implemented this technology plan to add additional security features and extend coverage over more of their office imaging devices.

Norman McLeod, Director of Market Research at InfoTrends, stated, “The growing interest in security options is not entirely surprising, as legislation such as Sarbanes-Oxley, Gramm Leach Bliley, and HIPPA has greatly increased the potential liability for security breaches. Not only can a security breach cause a company to incur hefty fines, but the intangible costs related to loss in customer confidence can be equally devastating.” He continued, “The message is clear—securing every device that touches the network (including printers, copiers, and scanners) is critical.”

For providers of secure printing technologies, the heightened concern for data integrity and security represents new business opportunities. Secure printing solutions can be used as a competitive differentiator and a value-added option. For those looking to capitalize on this emerging opportunity, a thorough understanding of the market drivers and customer behaviors is necessary. InfoTrends’ latest study, Secured Office Printing & Document Workflow: A Multi-Client Report, examines the market opportunity and provides insight and advice to vendors and document solutions providers who are hoping to tap into the secured printing opportunity.

As part of this project, InfoTrends conducted a structured survey of over 200 IT professionals. Survey participants included a mix of current users of secure printing and those who are considering or have recently considered secure printing implementation. Participants were also required to be decision makers or a part of the decision-making process. This survey provides critical statistics and other quantifiable data on technology adoption, usage patterns, purchase plans, and sentiments on a range of secure printing business issues.

The overall goal of the study is to help clients understand the status and prospect of secured printing, copying, and scanning devices as well as related software for the office environment. The study focuses specifically on the hardware and software approaches, which are the keys to the effective control of printing, copying, and scanning. With these considerations in mind, this study:

  • Examines “secure printing”
    - What are the major categories of documents or data that need to be secured against unauthorized printing?
    - In which departments do these documents typically reside (i.e., horizontal opportunities)?
    - Are there particular industries with greater or specific secure printing requirements (i.e., vertical opportunities)?
  • Estimates and forecasts the size of the U.S. secure printing market
    - Secured versus unsecured print/copy/scan devices
    - Segment by level of security – some devices secured, versus most or all
    - Secured versus unsecured print volumes
