Managed Print Services Shaking up the Office Equipment Market

InfoTrends' MPS Forecast Defines Segments and Growth Areas

(Weymouth, MA) January 13, 2010 . . . 2009 was a big year for Managed Print Services (MPS) in the office equipment industry. In fact, all of the original equipment vendors either launched a new MPS program or revitalized an old one. As the concept of Managed Print Services is not necessarily new and MPS is not adding additional revenue to the overall hardware and supplies market, many might wonder why so many have chosen to incorporate an MPS strategy. Simply put, MPS is making the overall office equipment space more competitive. Vendors and channel partners alike are battling to win their own piece of the market, and the message could not be clearer—companies that are not in the MPS game will face stiff competition and will likely lose customers to competitors that have an MPS strategy.

InfoTrends has just released its U.S. Managed Print Services Forecast: 2008 – 2013 to help businesses understand the market trends that are occurring and develop an MPS strategy that makes sense for their organization. Managed Print Solutions is expected to grow in all three segment tiers that InfoTrends has defined, which include supplies, print management, and advanced services. Growth is also expected to occur in the four categories of hardware, supplies, solutions, and services.

For many vendors, the idea behind Managed Print Services is not just strategic. MPS helps vendors to ensure their survival because it enables them to become more competitive and drive new business. A3 OEM vendors view MPS as a way to drive new opportunities through the displacement and capture of A4 pages (and eventually their products). From an A4 OEM vendor perspective, MPS has been about displacing A3 products and migrating pages to A4 devices. Both strategies are quite compelling, and this is a win-win situation for customers because it generates product rationalization and overall cost reduction.

Randy Dazo, a Director at InfoTrends, stated, “An MPS strategy enables vendors to capture the lucrative supplies and pages business of their entire customer environment. The big difference today is that vendors are willing to capture the pages of their competitors as well.”

InfoTrends’ Managed Print Services Forecast quantifies and defines the current state of the U.S. Managed Print Services market and also identifies future growth prospects. It provides the insight businesses need to deliver the most valuable MPS strategy for their customers and their business.
