The Changing Face of the DSLR Buyer Helps Fuel the Digital Camera Market in Western Europe

(Weymouth, MA; Luton, UK) November 16, 2009 . . . DSLR cameras have continued to drive sales in Western Europe (France, Germany, and the UK) despite the down economy, providing market vendors with an opportunity for expansion and growth.

InfoTrends’ latest research shows that as the DSLR market matures, DSLR buyers are shifting from early adopter male hobbyists to female family memory keepers. Many first-time DSLR purchasers are being motivated to upgrade from point & shoot cameras as a result of the shutter lag issue associated with them. Although the early adopters and hobbyists were seeking the latest technologies, these new buyers will be more interested in ease of use, convenience, and competitive prices. In essence, these consumers are seeking the functionality of a DSLR while maintaining the simplicity of a point & shoot camera.

Mona Ghazaeepour, a Research Analyst at InfoTrends, commented, “If digital camera vendors hope to reignite the compact camera market and create a spike in replacement sales, they must address the shutter lag problem. Shutter lag remains a key consumer complaint, and digital camera vendors have yet to offer a solution. Cameras that eliminate lag time would likely convince many people to purchase new cameras, even if they last made a purchase only about a year ago. Digital camera vendors who do not have DSLRs in their lineups must work on addressing this issue to prevent consumers from defecting to other camera brands.”

InfoTrends has just released a report entitled Western European Digital Camera Purchasing Behaviours that examines digital camera purchasing behaviours among consumers in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The analysis is based on data from InfoTrends’ 2007, 2008 and 2009 Western European Digital Photography End-User Surveys. This report discusses key factors that influence digital camera owners’ purchasing decisions and also analyses the future purchasing intentions of digital camera owners and non-owners.
