Young Adults are Most Active Camera Phone Users

(Weymouth, MA) September 23, 2009 . . . It is undeniable that teenagers and young adults are highly engaged in many areas of digital photography. Not only has InfoTrends’ research shown that these consumers take more digital photos than those in other segments, but they also share a greater percentage of those photos.  In fact, this age group represents opportunities in many areas of digital photography.

Younger consumers are particularly active camera phone photographers. While total respondents in InfoTrends’ latest mobile photography end-user study reported capturing over 25 camera phone photos every three months, this number jumped considerably to over 45 photos for those under 18. What’s more, the percentage of male teenagers/young adults that reported using their camera phone most often for photo capture was double that of total respondents. This number was also significantly higher for female teenagers/young adults.

Camera phones are clearly more popular for photo capture among respondents under age 25. Camera phone resolution certainly lags behind that of digital cameras, but it is possible that even more teenagers/young adults will embrace camera phones as their primary photo capture devices as handset resolutions and specifications continue to improve.

To delve more deeply into this consumer segment, InfoTrends has released a special edition of its 2009 Mobile Photography End-User Survey, placing a special focus on teenagers and young adults (respondents between the ages of 13 and 24). This report, Spotlight on Teenagers and Young Adults: Mobile Photography, examines the mobile photography habits of these consumers including camera phone/smartphone ownership and use, camera phone photography habits, and mobile Web implementation. Where appropriate, the teenagers’ and young adults’ responses are separated by gender and/or compared to those of the total survey population to further illuminate the differences between these groups. This report reveals some telling facts about what this important consumer segment values in regard to camera phone photography.

Carrie Sylvester, a Senior Research Analyst at InfoTrends, commented, “Placing a spotlight on teenagers and young adults yields some fascinating results. Successful camera phone vendors will listen to the demands of tech-savvy teenagers/young adults, and then develop features that are geared specifically toward their unique needs.”

InfoTrends has also released four other Spotlight on Young Adults reports focusing on social networkingdigital still camerasretail photo printing, and home photo printing.
