Younger Consumers Embrace Photo Sharing through Social Networks

(Weymouth, MA) September 22, 2009 . . . Social networking has quickly become extremely popular among teenagers and young adults in the U.S. In fact, InfoTrends’ research confirms that nearly 78% of consumers ages 18 to 24 and just over 68% of consumers ages 13 to 17 are regular users of social networking sites, and have come to view social networking as a valuable resource for staying in touch with friends and family.

These same consumers, especially females, have also identified photo sharing as one of the top activities they engage in on social networking sites. Almost 60% of female teenagers and young adults stated that they frequently post pictures for their friends to see. Total respondents most commonly cited e-mail as their favorite way to share photos electronically.

Alan Bullock, an Associate Director at InfoTrends, commented, “Younger consumers have clearly embraced social networking as an easy way to stay connected to friends and family. They are also active photographers, and sharing photos is an important part of their social networking experience.” He continued, “Not surprisingly, teens and young adults have unique attitudes, perceptions, and preferences when it comes to these activities. Understanding them is important for online photo services, photo printing services, and retailers that hope to reach this large potential customer base.”

To further investigate the social networking and photo sharing habits of those under age 25, InfoTrends has released a special edition of its Social Networks and Photo Sharing End-User Survey entitled Spotlight on Teenagers and Young Adults: Social Networks and Photo Sharing. This report offers insight into how this younger consumer segment engages in social networking and related photo activities. The results provide telling details on the needs and values of this important demographic.

InfoTrends has also released four other Spotlight on Young Adults reports focusing on mobile photographydigital still camerasretail photo printing, and home photo printing.
