InfoTrends Releases In-Depth Study of SharePoint Opportunities and Costs

(Weymouth, MA) September 15, 2009 . . . Already an impressive market according to anecdotal reports, InfoTrends’ latest research indicates that comprehensive U.S. SharePoint revenues – including licenses, hardware, software, and services – will surpass $5 billion in 2012. The recently-released study, Gathering MOSS? Revealing SharePoint Opportunities and Costs, investigates how best to tap into the SharePoint opportunity, including detailed examinations of customer behavior for adopting and developing SharePoint.

Omri Duek, a Consultant at InfoTrends, commented, “Adoption rates that exceed the most popular document systems today should not be taken lightly, especially when they extend to small and medium business sizes.” He added, “Microsoft’s strategy relies on vendors to fill valuable SharePoint gaps, which range from scanning and capture at the front of the document lifecycle to publishing and archiving on the back-end. With this study, we’ve been able to pinpoint areas of intense demand and opportunity.”

While SharePoint undoubtedly represents a threat to lower-tier document management and collaboration software vendors, this study does point to an opportunity for these vendors within the small business segment and as extensions to SharePoint front-ends. For other hardware, software, and services providers, the SharePoint market is predominantly a positive development with regards to pull-through revenue potential. Representing approximately 2/3 of deployment investments, SharePoint-related revenues for office i/o devices, servers and storage, software extensions, and a gamut of services are substantial.

Project objectives for Gathering MOSS? Revealing SharePoint Opportunities and Costs included:

  • Quantify the penetration of MOSS 2007 on an “active user” basis
  • Qualify the current and expected use of MOSS 2007 across small, medium, and large organizations as well as across vertical industries
  • Understand perceptions, deployments, and challenges of MOSS 2007 for more robust solutions
  • Examine the costs and requirements for deploying MOSS 2007 across a range of uses and scales
  • Discover how customers engage with providers of MOSS-related services and solutions
  • Evaluate the value of these engagements for various use-cases
  • Enumerate the most highly demanded services, solutions, and hardware integrations around the MOSS platform today and in 2 years time.
