InfoTrends’ European Managed Print Services Study Answers Key Questions

(Weymouth, MA; Luton, UK) August 04, 2009 . . . The Professional and Managed Print Services (PMPS) surge has expanded greatly as vendors have begun moving into this space with aggressive programmes. The worldwide economic crisis has also had some positive effects on MPS, as these types of programmes promise to reduce costs and increase efficiency, while requiring little to no investments from their prospective buyers. Nevertheless, this is a complex market with many variations regarding channels, delivery of service, and customer requirements and expectations. To really understand the PMPS phenomenon, one must look at the trends of the office equipment industry and the history behind how buyers and sellers of this market have worked with each other over the past five years.

InfoTrends has released the results of a comprehensive multi-client study entitled European Professional and Managed Print Services: The Final Differentiator for the Office Equipment Market. Focusing on Germany, the UK, and France, this study analysed historical and current PMPS trends to help predict how the market might evolve in the future. The focus of this study is two-fold, including an end-user study and a channel study. The end-user study examined key topics such as:

  • Services included in PMPS contract
  • Key decision makers
  • Awareness and adoption of PMPS
  • Criteria for choosing an PMPS vendor
  • Services provided by current PMPS providers
  • Annual prices paid for PMPS

Traditionally, the large and mid-markets have been serviced by direct OEM organizations, traditional copier dealers and IT resellers, VARs, and systems integrators. Each of these channels has some core strengths, but they often fall short of being able to offer a true portfolio of professional services. The channel study sought to determine who is best poised to deliver these services. InfoTrends also conducted structured interviews with qualified end users and channel participants currently offering professional services as part of the project.

The results of this multi-client study deliver the insight necessary to deliver maximum value to PMPS customers. Randall Dazo, a Group Director at InfoTrends, commented, “The ultimate goal of PMPS is to provide services to customers that improve their output infrastructure with cost, management, or business improvements that effectively create positive results. All vendors will say that their services will reduce customers’ output costs and impact their bottom lines, but price savings alone will never be a good differentiator when all other things are equal.” He continued, “Differentiation will be achieved through intimacy, transparency, and consistency of the customer engagement. Working with your customers to solve their pain points is paramount to capturing and retaining business.”
