Refined Approach Required for Success in Scanner Market

(Weymouth, MA) July 21, 2009 . . . The global economic downturn has had a significant effect on many markets, and InfoTrends’ latest document imaging forecast for North America reveals that the scanner market is no exception. Many segments experienced positive placement and revenue growth between 2007 and 2008, but most are expected to see declines in 2009 and throughout the forecast period. The recession is likely to wane by the end of 2009, but its impact will likely be much more far-reaching. It will take some time for the industry to fully recover, and total placements and revenues are expected to be affected through 2013.

That said, the decline that is expected in many segments will be less severe in the outer years of the forecast period. Declines may be steep over the next two years, but they are likely to stabilize over time. Many segments will then be in a position to resume positive growth moving forward.

Companies must employ new and creative strategies to find pockets of success in a tough market. Taking a vertical approach for some has become a new means to bolster business. With promises of millions in stimulus dollars and a potential softening of the credit crunch, vendors are seeking ways to remain competitive. Healthcare, education, and government are said to reap many of the benefits of the “Obama” plan. Peeling back the layers on the details has proven challenging, but a concerted effort to understand and educate from the vendor side is under way to be able to adequately attack these areas.

Anne Valaitis, Director of InfoTrends’ Image Scanning Trends Service, commented, “Even with the current challenges, it is possible to remain profitable. The key is marketing the right products to the right groups, providing the necessary market education along the way.”
