(Weymouth, MA; Luton, U.K.) July 08, 2009 . . . InfoTrends’ latest research indicates that the economic downturn will have a negative impact on the Western European digital camera market, at least for the immediate future. Coupled with a maturing camera market, overall unit shipments are projected to decline by 8% for 2009. Nevertheless, the market is expected to return to a positive growth rate in 2010. As the market resumes more traditional growth rates, vendors will need to be prepared to address the changing demographics of buying consumers. As repeat buyers account for the majority of purchasers, vendors are enticing them to upgrade their current models by offering low prices and impressive feature sets. Digital cameras have evolved remarkably over the past decade, becoming ever smaller in size and incorporating features that facilitate the capture of stunning photos. Nevertheless, Ed Lee, Director of InfoTrends consumer imaging services, cautions, “While we still think it is wise for vendors to incorporate new features in their products, it is important that they consider the changes that have taken place in the overall consumer base. While the market was once dominated by tech-savvy hobbyists and early adopters, it now includes many more consumers from the general population. Not only are these mainstream consumers looking for the ability to take great photos, but they want to do so with very little technical knowledge.” As vendors continue to add new features to their products, they must do so in a way that simplifies the picture-taking process, catering to the needs of the changing consumer base. Ultimately, these mainstream consumers are seeking products that will enable them to take the best photos possible with little or no learning curve on using the device. To meet the needs of the market, vendors must consider the user experience alongside the technical capabilities of their products.
