New Entry-Level DSLRs to Feature Simplicity and Ease of Use

(Weymouth, MA) June 08, 2009 . . . InfoTrends’ latest research on the North American consumer digital camera market indicates that the appeal of digital single lens reflex (SLR) cameras is growing among family memory keepers and snapshot photographers, and is no longer just within the domain of the photo hobbyist. The adoption of DSLRs by this broader base of consumers will drive growth in this segment over the next five years. In fact, DSLRs will grow to account for over a quarter of revenues in the overall consumer digital camera market by 2014.

“These new DSLR consumers are seeking smaller, lighter, easier-to-use DSLRs and vendors must incorporate these features into entry-level models to capitalize on this opportunity,” commented Ed Lee, a Group Director at InfoTrends. Lee continued, “More automated features already common in compact cameras, such as red eye removal and face detection, will make their way into DSLRs. HD video capture and Live View will become standard features. In essence, entry-level DSLRs will become fancy point-and-shoot cameras with interchangeable lenses.”

While there are plenty of first-time DSLR buyers to tap into, the compact camera market consists almost entirely of repeat and replacement buyers. Therefore, vendors must be on the lookout for ways to deliver new and better products to encourage consumers to upgrade. Eliminating pain points and improving features through innovative technologies will not only stimulate growth in digital camera sales, but it could also increase overall digital imaging activity. Although many consumers are already engaged in digital photography, there is plenty of room to grow by bringing to market products that answer specific consumer needs.
