Young Adults Present Bright Spot in Western Europe Photo Printing Market

(Weymouth, MA) April 06, 2009. . . According to InfoTrends’ Western European end-user research spanning 2005 – 2008, adults ages 18 to 24 take, share, and print more photos than the other age groups. In fact those in the 18-24 age group reported printing almost twice as many photos as those in the 40-54 age group.

Although younger consumers may have less disposable income than older consumers, it is possible that their strong interest in photography will drive them to spend a disproportionate amount of their income on digital photography activities. It is also possible that this group, due to their low incomes, will choose to opt for free services, like sharing on social networks. Nevertheless, high levels of photo activity when consumers are young may lead to photography continuing to play an important role in their lives as they grow older.

Mona Ghazaeepour, Senior Research Analyst for InfoTrends' Digital Photography Trends Service, commented, “Although there is a trend for consumers in Western Europe to print less over time, there are specific consumer segments, such as young adults, that will remain active. Vendors that tailor their marketing and product development strategies to these groups will continue to grow their profits.” This research also revealed significant variations in printing behavior according to photographer type, with certain groups printing a significantly higher number of photos than others.

InfoTrends’ report Consumer Photo Printing Trends 2005-2008 provides an analysis of InfoTrends’ Western European Digital Photography End-User Surveys carried out in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. The surveys were conducted among Internet-connected households in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. This report looks closely at consumer photo printing trends over a four year period, offering insight on digital camera owners’ printing behaviour. It offers data according to country, photographer type, and age group.
