(Weymouth, MA) March 4, 2009 . . . According to a new multi-client study from InfoTrends, digital printing is quickly displacing offset in in-plant environments, especially for color printing. In fact, while just under 63% of respondents to our 2004 study were offering color digital printing, that number rose to nearly 86% in our 2008 research. In addition, the percentage of in-plants offering offset printing has dropped significantly during the same time period. This market shift was revealed in a major new multi-client study from InfoTrends entitled In-House Production Printing: Critical Trends for Corporations, Government, Education, and Non-Profits. This study examines the full range of corporate printing services, print technology utilization, and adoption of software solutions. It serves as a follow up to InfoTrends’ 2004 study, Corporate Print Services: The In-Plant Printing Opportunity. Where appropriate, comparisons are made between the results of the 2004 and 2008 studies. “Through this project, we have learned that several factors are contributing to the switch from offset to digital,” commented Steve Adoniou, Associate Director of InfoTrends' On Demand Printing & Publishing Consulting Service. He continued, “In-plants are recognizing the benefits that digital printing offers and they are finding that printing digitally makes a lot of sense for many applications.” Document obsolescence echoed throughout our research as a main driver for printing digitally. One company that we interviewed stated that digital printing has greatly simplified the process of updating and storing their equipment manuals, resulting in significant cost savings and increased efficiency throughout the company. This also rang true for the printing of marketing materials such as brochures. As part of this study, InfoTrends deployed a Web-based survey to U.S. in-plant employees, in which 376 qualified respondents participated. In addition, InfoTrends conducted 15 in-depth phone interviews with survey respondents that represented a variety of vertical industry segments. This study offers valuable insight into the forces that are affecting the in-plant market and the trends that are emerging as a result.
