Areas of Modest Growth Remain in U.S. Printing & Publishing Market despite Economic Turmoil

(Weymouth, MA) February 20, 2009 . . . According to InfoTrends’ research, while commercial litho remains the largest segment in terms of value of shipments among the print and related services segments, digital printing is the fastest growing area. Despite being relatively smaller in size than most segments, digital printing establishments are growing in terms of the number of establishments as well as the value of shipments. One factor contributing to this growth is the fact that many establishments that may have originated as either a prepress service bureau, quick print, or even offset litho have evolved into digital printing sites. This is a direct result of a migration of their business from one of these other more traditional models to a new business model and, hence, primary source of revenue, which is now coming from digital printing.

Nevertheless, the 2008 recession has certainly had an impact on nearly all sectors of the economy, including printing. While some segments such as digital color and direct mail still represent growth opportunities, the growth rates of these segments will be impacted by the economic downturn. Continuing declines in print volumes will likely intensify the downward trend of the overall market, along with other factors such as competition from other media, the transformation of the industry, and high competitiveness within a mature market.

Steve Adoniou, an Associate Director at InfoTrends, commented, “We expect that the U.S. economy will begin recovering in either the second half of 2009 or early 2010. Once a recovery is underway, we expect that the U.S. printing, publishing, and related industries will resume modest growth rates.”
