Brazil’s Hard Copy Imaging Market to Grow Steadily through 2012

(Weymouth, MA), February 06, 2009 . . . Despite the recent global economic downturn, InfoTrends’ research indicates that the BRIC region remains a viable revenue source for the office document technology market. In addition, the flattening of the office document technology market in developed markets such as the U.S. and Western Europe make the emerging markets a very good opportunity for this industry. In fact, research from InfoTrends conducted in November and December of 2008 indicates that Brazil’s hard copy imaging market will experience steady growth of 10.6% (in terms of units) through 2012.

While Brazil represents a good target for the office document technology industry, like all BRIC countries it exhibits unique idiosyncrasies ranging from governmental regulations to purchasing requirements of customers. Knowledge of these country specific variations is vital to gaining access to these markets. InfoTrends’ new multi-client study, Emerging Markets Multi-Client Study: Brazil, is designed to provide a comprehensive view of Brazil’s office document technology market, highlighting opportunities for solutions, hardware, and supplies vendors as well as resellers and distributors. InfoTrends has also conducted in-depth studies for Russia, India, and China as part of this project.

InfoTrends’ research shows that the Brazilian imaging and printing market presents a number of challenges and opportunities for equipment vendors. This study indicates that about 40% of respondents in Brazil purchased an inkjet-based printer or MFP as their most recent A4-size device. This suggests a much higher level of penetration for inkjet in Brazilian office environments compared with other BRIC countries.

InfoTrends’ Group Director Jon Reardon commented, “Customers in Brazil are extremely price sensitive, and equipment price plays an important role in any purchase decision. This is likely the main reason that the hardware market in Brazil is currently dominated by inkjet technology. Due to the prevalence of inkjet printers and all-in-ones in the Brazilian office imaging market, many small businesses likely use an inkjet-based machine as their primary printing device.”

At the same time, users in Brazil place strong value on performance, quality, and reliability, and our survey data shows that there is a desire to move to page printing technologies in the future. Of course, monochrome laser devices rank highest among future purchases but even among those users who plan to purchase a color device, laser-based MFPs rank highest followed by inkjet all-in-ones.

Research for this study consisted of a telephone-delivered structured survey (306 respondents in Brazil) as well as in-depth interviews with end-users, vendors, channels, and government regulatory agencies. In addition, these studies include valuable forecast data in terms of hardware, supplies, and software solutions from InfoTrends’ Digital Peripherals Solutions, Communication Supplies, and Network Document Solutions Consulting Services. These results provide essential knowledge for vendors that wish to expand their profits by tapping into these up and coming markets.
