Educating Consumers in India on Value of Color Could Catalyze Major Market Shift

(Weymouth, MA) February 05, 2009 . . . Despite the recent global economic downturn, InfoTrends’ research indicates that the BRIC region remains a viable market for the office document technology market. In addition, the flattening of the office document technology market in developed markets such as the U.S. and Western Europe make the emerging markets a very good opportunity for this industry. In fact, research from InfoTrends conducted in November and December of 2008 indicates that India’s marking supplies industry is currently growing at a rate of 20%, and the corresponding demand for paper is growing at a rate of 17%.

The demand in this country is heavily weighted toward black & white electrophotography, and this will remain the case through 2012. Color, although small initially, is expected to achieve a CAGR of 54% over the forecast period and should begin to rival black & white electrophotography a few years beyond the forecast horizon of 2012.

Color is widely viewed as valuable in India, but it is also perceived to be expensive. For the most part, color is strongly controlled in India and reserved only for those activities that require it. Interestingly, however, survey data also shows that end-users in India rank operating costs, rather than equipment price, as the number one barrier to increased color adoption. In addition, Indian users are largely adopting low-price machines where running costs would typically be relatively high.

InfoTrends’ Group Director Jon Reardon commented, “Vendors have a strong opportunity to help spur the transition to color in this region. Copier vendors, in particular, should focus on upgrading the existing monochrome A3-size equipment base to color devices by promoting attractive cost-per-copy programs. Of course, monochrome running costs remain important in India, and InfoTrends believes that vendors will achieve the greatest success by promoting universal color devices that offer attractive per-page color pricing with no premium to monochrome page pricing.”

While India represents a viable market for the office document technology industry, like all BRIC countries it exhibits unique idiosyncrasies ranging from governmental regulations to purchasing requirements of customers. Knowledge of these country specific variations, such as the widespread beliefs regarding color noted above, is vital to gaining access to these markets. InfoTrends’ new multi-client study, Emerging Markets Multi-Client Study: India, is designed to provide a comprehensive view of the Indian office document technology market, highlighting opportunities for solutions, hardware, and supplies vendors as well as resellers and distributors. InfoTrends has also conducted in-depth studies for Brazil, Russia, and China as part of this project.

Research for this study consisted of a telephone-delivered structured survey (302 respondents in India) as well as in-depth interviews with end-users, vendors, channels, and government regulatory agencies. In addition, these studies include valuable forecast data in terms of hardware, supplies, and software solutions from InfoTrends’ Digital Peripherals Solutions, Communication Supplies, and Network Document Solutions Consulting Services. These results provide essential knowledge for vendors that wish to expand their profits by tapping into these up and coming markets.
