Russia Offers Viable Revenue Source for Maturing Office Document Technology Market

(Weymouth, MA) February 02, 2009 . . . As the office document technology market continues to show signs of flat growth in unit placements and increased erosion of profit margins in developed markets such as the U.S. and Western Europe, vendors must find new sources of revenue. Emerging markets such as the BRIC countries present a very good opportunity for the office document technology industry. Although it is undeniable that Russia has faced significant economic challenges in recent months, the opportunity for growth in this market remains. For example, the Russian supplies market is projected to exceed $2.5 billion by 2012.

While the BRIC countries represent viable markets for the office document technology industry, these countries have unique idiosyncrasies ranging from governmental regulations to purchasing requirements of customers. Knowledge of these country specific variations is vital to gaining access to these markets. InfoTrends’ new study, Emerging Markets Multi-Client Study: Russia, is designed to provide a comprehensive view of the Russian office document technology market, highlighting opportunities for solutions, hardware, and supplies vendors as well as resellers and distributors. InfoTrends has also conducted in-depth studies for Brazil, China, and India as part of this project.

According to this study, revenue from toner, photoreceptors, EP cartridges, and inkjet cartridges in Russia is projected to demonstrate a CAGR of over 10% from 2007 to 2012. Similarly, paper consumption is expected to grow at a CAGR of just under 10% through 2012. This growth is bolstered by the low incidence of duplex printing in the Russian market in comparison to more developed regions such as the U.S. and Western Europe. Russia is weighted heavily toward lower speed devices, the majority of which do not offer duplex capability as a standard feature.

InfoTrends’ Group Director Jon Reardon commented, “It is extremely important to understand the behaviors and variations that are characteristic of emerging markets. In particular, in Russia there is a widespread belief that color is unnecessary. While vendors should strive to educate the Russian market on the value of color, vendors should embrace the acceptance of monochrome and focus on those areas that remain important to office users in Russia—equipment price, reliability, and performance.”

Research for this study consisted of a telephone-delivered structured survey (303 respondents in Russia) as well as in-depth interviews with end-users, vendors, channels, and government regulatory agencies. In addition, these studies include valuable forecast data in terms of hardware, supplies, and software solutions from InfoTrends’ Digital Peripherals Solutions, Communication Supplies, and Network Document Solutions Consulting Services. The results provide essential knowledge for vendors that wish to expand their profits by tapping into these up and coming markets.
