Competition and Ecological Concerns Shaping Wide Format Inkjet Solvent Market

(Weymouth, MA) January 30, 2009… According to new InfoTrends forecast data, the total wide format solvent inkjet system revenue (hardware, ink, media, and service contracts) is presently valued at $4.14 billion. The market is expected to decline to $3.7 billion by 2012. This decline is being caused by two major factors – competition from new UV-curable inkjet printing systems and an increased focus on the reduction of volatile organic compounds emitted when solvent inks are drying.

One of the major advantages of solvent inkjet has been the high image durability on uncoated flexible substrates. This has been a limitation of some competing technologies, such as UV-curable inkjet. However, there are a number of attempts to improve UV-curable ink’s capabilities on flexible and even stretchable substrates. Such improvements in image quality will hasten the movement from solvent inkjet towards UV-curable even more rapidly than is currently expected.

With the growing awareness of environmental issues, InfoTrends is seeing rapid transition out of high-end or robust solvent inkjet printing in many parts of the world. These changes at the high-end of the solvent market have a significant impact on the total market value. When we compare the revenue from each segment, we see that high-end system revenue is expected to decline 7.8% annually over the forecast period, while revenue from the other combined segments is expected to grow.

“It is important to note that the trend toward lower running costs and environmentally safer printing methods is primarily based in the North American and Western European markets,” commented Tim Greene, Director of InfoTrends’ Wide Format Consulting Service. “Emerging markets for wide format digital printing in India, Latin America, and Eastern Europe are still seeing new market entries in their domestic markets. In addition, the primary market for high-end wide format solvent inkjet printers is in China, which has much higher running cost sensitivity as well as lower levels of environmental sensitivity.”
