(Weymouth, MA) December 09 . . . There is much speculation in the industry today over the types and amounts of substrates used in production digital environments. Are these environments using only digital papers or are offset and other substrates also being used? If these papers are being utilized, what volume is being used? To answer these questions, InfoTrends conducted an in-depth study entitled U.S. Paper Migration: Capturing Offset Papers in a Digital Environment. Research for the study consisted of interviews with paper producers, service providers, OEMs, and paper merchants as well as a structured Web survey that was administered to 300 print service providers. The findings of the study have vital implications for how OEMs design production digital equipment and on how paper producers manufacture and market their product offerings. According to this latest research, a substantial volume of offset papers are indeed moving through digital presses. John Shane, Director of InfoTrends’ Communication Supplies Consulting Service, commented, “Offset paper is particularly prevalent in production monochrome digital print. This is primarily a function of cost and the types of monochrome documents generated, many of which are not held up to the scrutiny of color digital prints. As such, offset paper usually “suffices” for this type of printed material. In addition, the so-called “mixed shops” are more apt to have folio/parent house sheets on the shop floor that can always be cut down to digital size for use on digital devices if inventories of digital sheets run low.”
