(Weymouth, MA) November 25, 2008 . . . According to InfoTrends’ latest research, the Western European market for paper with recycled content continues to grow. This market experienced rapid growth from 2006 to 2007, rising by 48,000 tonnes, and grew another 11% in 2007. This upsurge in growth follows a more gradual development period of consumption in the early 2000s. Whilst the growth in environmental awareness in 2006 and 2007 has been significant across all of Europe, if not the world, the rate of adoption in Western Europe has varied significantly by country. At 97,000 tonnes, the U.K. surpassed the German market of 87,000 tonnes in 2007, due to the success of M-Real’s strategy in the London area, as well as the pressure from the media as well as the government pressure on businesses and consumers in the U.K. to use recycled products. For many years, the practically land-locked country of Germany has been the most environmentally friendly country of Europe. This country was very early to encourage and even legislate consumers to separate their waste and use more recycled products and has historically been largely accepting of “grey” recycled paper. Catherine Cresswell, an Associate Director at InfoTrends, commented, “Interestingly, the availability of recycled papers with increasingly higher whiteness levels is causing changes in the dynamics of the market. France, which is more demanding than other countries in terms of the look and feel of papers, only reported that 4% of its business papers were recycled in 2007. This number, however, will likely rise substantially as brighter papers with recycled content hit the market.
