High-Speed Color Production Devices Driving Growth in U.S. Print On Demand Market

(Weymouth, MA) November 6, 2008…According to a new forecast from InfoTrends, the total production copying and digital printing market in the United States will account for 789 billion impressions in 2012, with the retail value of print approaching $79 billion.

Color continues to be the major driver within the overall market. In fact, the most notable growth for service and supplies revenues as well as the retail value of print will occur in production color devices with speeds 45 ppm and greater.

On the multi-function peripheral (MFP) side of the production color market, there are ongoing growth trends within all metrics. This segment of the market is driven mostly by placements and hence installed base. Although the print volumes on these devices are not very high, the sheer magnitude of devices operating in the field is tremendous.

There are some interesting dynamics occurring on the single-function side as well. InfoTrends’ research indicates continued investment plans in production color equipment. This trend may be facilitated by the notion that larger commercial printers that are considering equipment investments may choose some of the higher volume digital cut-sheet and roll-fed devices over offset sheet-fed devices. InfoTrends’ Group Director Jim Hamilton commented, “With higher speed devices entering the market on the cut-sheet side, and higher quality, high-speed devices that handle coated stocks potentially entering the market toward the end of the forecast period, we expect that more impressions will migrate from offset to digital.”
