InfoTrends Study Reveals That Consumers under 25 in Western Europe Are Embracing Digital Photography Activities

(Weymouth, MA) September 16, 2008 . . . According to InfoTrends’ recently completed Western Europe digital photography survey, consumers aged 18-24 are significantly more active photographers than the general population. While the average number of digital photos taken every 3 months was just under 77 for the total population surveyed, this number climbed to over 100 for consumers in this age group.

Younger consumers’ interest in photography was not limited to digital still cameras either, as they also reported taking a much higher number of camera phone photos than other consumers. In addition, in relation to the general population, respondents under the age of 25 were less likely to be motivated by spontaneity and more likely to be motivated by memory keeping (although very few were motivated by preserving memories) when it comes to taking camera phone photos.

Respondents under age 25 also reported sharing a significantly higher percentage of their photos than any other demographic group. InfoTrends Director Mette Eriksen commented, “It is not surprising that consumers under 25 share a greater portion of their photos than others because social networking is popular among young adults. As time goes on and these consumers age, it is likely that they will continue these photo sharing habits. It is important to continue to track these young respondents, as they will likely have a strong impact on the market of tomorrow.”

InfoTrends has released a report entitled 2008 Western European Digital Photography Survey: Digital Cameras and Photo Printing that offers further insight into this and other trends in the Western European digital photography market. This document provides an analysis of InfoTrends’ Western European Digital Photography End-User Study, which was conducted in April 2008 among Internet-connected households in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. This report presents data on Internet users’ digital camera ownership, usage, and applications. It includes information pertaining to digital cameras, camera phones, digital photo frames, photo merchandise, software, photo printing, and future purchasing intentions.
