Increased Participation in Digital Photo-Related Activities Presents New Revenue Opportunities for Vendors

(Weymouth, MA) September 08, 2008 . . . Digital photography has opened the door to new methods of viewing, editing, sharing, managing, and storing photos. Consumers are embracing these new activities in full force, and vendors in the digital imaging space can gain access to new revenue streams by refocusing their efforts to align with evolving consumer preferences.

Together with capture and print, these activities comprise an ecosystem that takes advantage of the digital nature of images in an interconnected world. This ecosystem brings with it many opportunities to provide consumers with solutions that offer viewing, sharing, and management of their photos (and videos), no-effort preservation of those digital memories, and easy access to their content through a variety of devices, regardless of where those files are stored. Vendors that are able to connect the components of the digital imaging system together in a simple solution, making the process as seamless as possible for the consumer, have the greatest chance for success.

One of the new activities made possible by digital photography, photo editing, has already undergone a transformation. While the focus was previously on correction, the high quality of the photos produced by the new cameras on the market has led to a shift toward more creative editing. This transition has brought about new revenue opportunities for online photo service providers, as consumers are more frequently using their photos to produce creative projects such as photo books, calendars, and a myriad of photo merchandise items.

In addition, the advent of digital photography has enabled consumers to capture and store an extraordinary number of digital images. InfoTrends estimates that the total number of unique images stored is more than 180 billion, and this number is projected to approach 347 billion by 2012. Storage requirements are staggering, and the opportunities for storage vendors are plentiful. InfoTrends’ Associate Director Alan Bullock commented, “Most consumers view the storage and management of their photos as a laborious task rather than an enjoyable activity, so vendors must offer solutions that are simple and affordable. They must also educate consumers on the importance of backing up their photos, as many consumers do not yet fully understand the need to safely protect their memories.”

InfoTrends has released a report entitled Personal Photo Activity Forecast: 2008 that provides information on consumers’ participation in these activities. This forecast report provides estimates for the number of consumers engaged in the activities of photo editing, storing and managing, sharing and viewing, and the number of unique images that those activities represent. The forecast period covers the years 2007 to 2012, while the analysis focuses on the years 2008 to 2012. Estimates are broken out by capture device (digital still camera and camera phone), platform, storage location, sharing method, and viewing device as appropriate for each activity. The report also offers insight into consumer preferences and interests.
