New Continuous-Feed Color Printing Devices Expanding Market Opportunity for Digital Printing Applications

(Weymouth MA) August 20, 2008 . . . While the cost of digital print has limited its use to short-run work, the lower running costs of continuous-feed color printing devices that have recently entered the market are knocking down these barriers. Digital print gets stuck in a short-run-only world if costs are high or if other barriers like complexity are present. These new products are becoming more competitive with traditional methods at much higher run lengths, driving the movement of pages from offset to digital printing.

In particular, the lower costs and quality improvements offered by these new devices are encouraging some print service providers in transaction environments to move from using pre-printed forms to an all-digital, white-paper-in/full-document-out mode. InfoTrends Group Director Jim Hamilton commented, “The collateral benefit of application roll-over for forms replacement in transaction environments is that it creates a living laboratory for further application tests. If forms replacement is feasible, how about more sophisticated TransPromo applications? What about customized publications, targeted catalogs, or on-demand books? These all have the opportunity to evolve out of this trend toward application roll-over.”

With drupa 2008 behind us, there is now a clearer picture of the current products and announced technologies that will be available for high-volume process color printing applications. InfoTrends has released a report entitled The Latest in High-Speed Continuous-Feed Process Color TransPromo Printing Solutions: A Market Overview that highlights the new products that are available in the U.S., with particular attention paid to running costs. This document also includes details of these new devices such as A4 throughput and metric web speeds wherever possible. Key highlights that are discussed in this report include:

  • Lower running costs of the new generation of continuous feed color market are opening up new opportunities
  • Application cross-over, made feasible by lower running costs, will drive new applications and offset transfer
  • A market that had few players as recently as a year ago is now awash in new competitive offerings
  • InfoTrends provides estimates of Océ JetStream 2200 running costs based on list price data from Océ.

This report is also being offered as a bundled purchase with six other InfoTrends reports that provide further information on these new products. Click here for more details.
