InfoTrends to Commence In-Depth Study on Paper Migration in the U.S.

(Weymouth MA) April 07, 2008…InfoTrends is pleased to announce the launch of a comprehensive new study entitled U.S. Paper Migration: Capturing Offset Papers in a Digital Environment. The study will take a thorough look at paper usage and quantify the throughput in digital environments.

There is confusion in the industry today over the types and amounts of substrates used in digital environments. Are digital environments using only digital papers, or are offset and other non-digital papers also being used? If these papers are being used, how much is being run through digital devices?

“It is evident that some offset and other non-digital papers are moving through digital presses,” commented David Pineault, an Associate Director at InfoTrends. “For example, pre-printed shells with static information originally printed on an offset device are being sent to digital presses to add variable data. We see this example in our daily lives when we receive the weekly real estate advertisements personalized with our agent’s name and contact information.”

John Shane, a Director at InfoTrends, commented, “Nevertheless, the question remains – how much digital printing volume is done on offset and other non-digital papers? Our study aims to provide answers to this and other pertinent questions.”

Project objectives are:

  • To provide paper manufacturers that manufacture offset papers with a deeper understanding of the potential opportunity to capture additional print volume and market share
  • To support printer OEMs who may be designing devices specifically for digital substrates
  • To obtain a better understanding of user desires and user choices regarding the range of available media
  • To provide a basis for better tracking of domestic cut size coated papers
  • To accurately size, describe, and forecast paper types moving through production digital devices

The research for this study will include a blend of primary research and an extensive review of existing InfoTrends studies on the paper industry. Primary research will consist of in-depth interviews with paper producers, service providers, OEMs, and paper merchants as well as a structured Web survey that will be administered to 300 print service providers.

Research for the study will focus primarily on the North American marketplace. Analysts will examine monochrome and color devices in the production digital printing environment, and we will investigate paper consumption on continuous as well as cut sheet electrophotographic devices.

For more information on the study or to sign up as a participant, contact Scott Phinney at +1 ext. 123 or via e-mail at . Early subscriber discounts are available until May 16, 2008. Clients that sign up early can also provide input and review of the structured surveys.
