Document Assessment Market to Achieve Notable Growth

(Weymouth, MA) January 22, 2008…As organizations are placed under more pressure to cut costs and increase productivity, document assessment services and solutions will take center stage. According to InfoTrends, U.S. businesses spent nearly $300 million in 2007 to analyze and optimize the production of documents within their operations. Forecasts indicate positive growth for the market, which will reach multi-billion dollar status by 2010.

The opportunity to engage customers in document assessment services is very high. Only 21.9% of respondents to a recent InfoTrends survey are currently utilizing third parties to perform this service. This means that approximately 78% of companies are either performing document assessments on their own or have never performed one at all. Furthermore, InfoTrends uncovered that 33% of self-assessors are likely to have a third party perform their assessments in the future. These figures indicate that there is a sizeable untapped market that vendors can engage in third-party document assessments.

InfoTrends is pleased to announce the release of a landmark study – “Document Assessment & Optimization Study,” which is designed to take an in-depth look at this emerging market. The research included 531 structured surveys with some small and mid-sized to large customers to determine project size and scope, budgets, and factors that influence purchasing behavior. The surveys targeted companies that were currently evaluating document assessment solutions as well as customers that had already used tools and professional services.

Medium-sized companies show the greatest promise for document assessment & cost optimization solutions. 82% of medium-sized companies are still either managing their own environments or have never even performed assessment services. “When targeting medium-sized companies, solutions providers should offer a tiered approach,” commented Randy Dazo, a Director at InfoTrends. “Some customers are willing to perform document assessments but do not require an outside company to do so. In cases like this, the channel can be used to fulfill the customer’s document assessment strategies, and a dedicated sales team (or direct organization) can be reserved for more complex document assessments.”

In-depth interviews were also conducted to gain insight into the “user experience,” which is critical in understanding customer satisfaction levels as well as pain points in implementing cost optimization and management solutions. These interviews also revealed whether these solutions are meeting customer expectations.

“Document assessment services can be a stepping stone for penetrating customers’ environments,” continued Dazo. “Research shows that customers that are implementing document assessment solutions are also interested in performing document workflow initiatives. Once customers are engaged, it is only natural to offer workflow solutions to improve output efficiencies and productivity.”
