Competitive Digital Colour Pricing Strategies Key to Continued Growth for Print Providers in Western Europe

(Weymouth, MA) October 16, 2007…Colour printing represents a major growth area for digital print in Western Europe. Revenues are expected to rise from €5.9 billion in 2006 to €15.6 in 2011. This strong growth will be driven by wider distribution and higher productivity of digital colour devices, as well as declines in costs and revenues per print. This in turn is driving customer acceptance and demand.

End-user pricing of the printed product is a critical factor for continued growth, as the market will remain extremely competitive. A recent survey asked printers to provide pricing for digital colour print. To achieve comparability, we researched two standardised products in three different run lengths for their digital colour production devices. Prices offered varied widely. Based on the same products and run length, the least expensive supplier offered prices that were 11 times cheaper than those of the most expensive one.

“Pricing can and should vary depending on business setup and company strategy,” commented Ralf Schlözer, an Associate Director at InfoTrends. “At the same time, however, it seems that some companies are struggling to develop effective pricing strategies, and many also seem to lack knowledge regarding their internal business costs.”

For example, the reported break-even points between offset and digital colour print varied from 200 to 4,000 copies. The great width of this range cannot be accounted for by differences related purely to devices and business setup alone.

Schlözer continued, “Print service providers must gain a comprehensive understanding of the changes that are taking place in this market to determine the right price points for their products and remain competitive while turning a profit. They must examine the factors that are influencing their costs of doing business and strategise to cut those costs and keep their prices competitive.”

A new report entitled “Digital Colour Print Pricing in Europe” offers a comparative overview of digital colour print pricing within four European countries as well as an outlook on pricing trends and cost factors. There is a special focus on break-even between digital colour print and offset from a print service provider’s point of view. In addition, pricing strategies for variable data printing and the handling of non-printable files are reviewed in the document.
