InfoTrends Releases Global Forecast for Jetting Technologies Market

(Weymouth, MA) July 30, 2007…InfoTrends announced today the release of a new market forecast for the jetting technologies market. The forecast covers continuous inkjet (CIJ) and drop-on demand technologies for the commercial printing and addressing, coding, and packaging markets.

Within the commercial printing and addressing market, total revenues for North American and European printers (including CIJ, piezo, thermal ink jet tabletop, and thermal ink jet console) are expected to show positive Compound Annual Growth Rates (CAGRs) of 5.5% and 4.5%, respectively between 2006 and 2011. For both regions, CIJ will have the lowest growth rate as a result of its mature position in the market. The thermal ink jet console market, meanwhile, will show the highest rate of growth.

“Outside of North America and Europe, commercial printing & addressing markets are still much smaller. Differences in culture, language, postal services, and mailing costs are the key inhibitors,” commented John Cook, a Director at InfoTrends. “We believe that direct mail markets will remain constrained by these deterrents during the forecast period and likely beyond. Nevertheless, some growth potential does exist.”

Total worldwide coding printer revenues are expected to demonstrate a CAGR of 3.3%, rising from $585 million in 2006 to $688 million in 2011. Worldwide coding printer shipments are expected to increase from 80,901 units in 2006 to 97,077 units in 2011 (3.7% CAGR). Shipments of thermal ink jet coding printers show the greatest potential for growth, and are expected to demonstrate a CAGR of 11.5%.

For the worldwide packaging market, the total number of inkjet shipments will experience a CAGR of only 2.5% over the forecast period. The overall average will be negatively impacted by the inclusion of case coding within corrugated. This decreasing demand coupled with significant volumes will skew the emerging market message. All major areas, including flexible packaging, will show CAGRs ranging from 27% to 43% over the forecast period. Thus, a robust growth opportunity (relative to current volumes) exists across virtually all sectors.

Total worldwide packaging revenues are expected to show a CAGR of 20% between 2007 and 2012, as the corrugated (case coding) element will have less of an impact due to significantly lower ASPs and declining shipment volumes.

“Vendors should make an effort to focus on the market segments where there is a solid value proposition for the use of ink jet printing. This includes creating demand at the end-user level for personalization, versioning, shorter runs, and faster turnaround for shipment of final product. This applies to the commercial printing, direct mail, and packaging markets,” continued Cook. “Because many of the markets in North America and Europe are approaching maturity, it also makes sense to continue targeting the Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions, as they might have untapped resources that could generate additional revenues.”

InfoTrends’ Worldwide Jetting Technology Market Forecast: 2006-2011 provides a 5-year outlook for industrial ink jet system units, system revenues, and ink revenues. It covers the worldwide market areas of coding, commercial printing & addressing, and packaging and is cut by subsegment, technology, and application.
