InfoTrends Releases U.S. Print-On-Demand Market Forecast

Retail Value of Production Color Print to Grow at 20% CAGR through 2011

(Weymouth, MA) July 24, 2007…The total production copying and digital printing market in the United States will account for 922 billion impressions in 2011, generating total annual equipment, supply, and service revenues of more than $22.3 billion; the retail value of print will exceed $84 billion.

“Color continues to be the major headline maker,” commented Jim Hamilton, a Group Director at InfoTrends. “There have been many new product introductions, and almost every vendor has an opportunity to do well with new color offerings. We are also seeing a phase of rapid adoption by print service providers, and given that these products appeal to corporate workgroup users as well, they are increasingly being implemented in corporations.”

InfoTrends expects the retail value of print for production color Print-On-Demand environments (24+ ppm) to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20% over the forecast period, reaching $63 billion by 2011. “This will account for 75% of the total retail value of print for the production copying and digital printing market,” noted Hamilton.

Equipment, service, and supply revenues for this category will also grow rapidly and are expected to reach $15.1 billion by 2011. The growth in color Print On Demand is being driven by applications such as direct mail, TransPromotional documents, and on-demand books, and it is facilitated by Web-to-print tools.

Black & white Print On Demand is in decline, as black & white pages are shifting to color devices. Annual impressions will decline over the forecast period at a -2% CAGR. The retail value of black & white Print On Demand will also decline at a comparable rate.
