Cut-Size Paper Market Shows Signs of Continued Growth

(Weymouth, MA) March 20, 2006… Despite claims to the contrary, our society will not become paperless anytime soon, but growth rates will begin to slow down over the next few years. Data from InfoTrends’ Cut-Size Research Survey shows that volumes have increased every year, even during the worst of times. Cut-size survey totals were valued at 5,770,726 tons in 2004, and this amount is expected to reach 6.3 million tons by 2009.

InfoTrends’ latest survey entitled Cut-Size Survey Results: 1999-2004 details the total cut-size production by North American paper mills between 1999 and 2004. InfoTrends conducts this survey annually to assess mill production and product ranges. In addition to outlining the survey results, the document considers how the market has changed since 1999 and provides an outlook through 2009.

“This report serves as an invaluable tool for tracking trends and changes in the cyclical paper market,” commented Merilyn Dunn, a Director at InfoTrends. “The information supplied by all the participating companies in these surveys is extremely beneficial, and the entire industry can profit from the knowledge obtained in gathering this data.”

The survey consists of ten questions, each with multiple parts. Key findings included:

  • Looking ahead, the issue of brightness will show the greatest change. By 2009, the total for <85 bright paper could be under 500,000 tons, and a figure this low was virtually unimaginable a year ago.
  • Papers sold as “copier paper” accounted for more than 67% of the totals reported, reducing the potential cachet of papers branded as “multipurpose.”
  • Plain and 3-hole punched 8 ½” x 11” papers account for over 90% of all sizes.
  • Private-label and generic brands are taking market share from mill brands and OEM brands. Mill and OEM brands declined between 2003 and 2004, while private-label and generic brands increased.
