InfoTrends Releases Series of Media Supplies Forecasts

Inkjet Technology, Cut-size Paper, and Color Imaging Technology Dominate

(Weymouth, MA) January 3, 2006…InfoTrends’ North American Communication Supplies Consulting Service has just released its new media supplies forecasts. Each forecast provides a top-line summary and a five year outlook for single-function and multifunctional copiers; direct-to-press equipment; duplicators; facsimile machines; impact, inkjet, laser, and thermal transfer printers; and typewriters.

First in the series of forecasts is the U.S. All Hardware Market Forecast: 2004-2009. According to the forecast, inkjet technology accounts for over half of all imaging equipment that is currently in use and, by 2009, this technology will account for over 70% of products in the installed base. Inkjet and toner-based devices are cannibalizing the installed base of the six remaining “Other” print technologies, namely thermal transfer, direct thermal, impact printing, duplicators, typewriters, and direct-to-press equipment.

U.S. Media Pages Market Forecast: 2004-2009 indicates that cut-size pages will continue to dominate the market, accounting for 90% of the market by 2009. Pages imaged on color devices are also expected to grow.  Color pages accounted for approximately 13% of all pages during 2004, and this percentage is expected to reach 37% by 2009.

Third in the series is the U.S. Media Prints Market Forecast: 2004-2009. The forecast reveals that color prints will generate the highest growth, with single-function and multifunctional color laser printers experiencing 53.7% and 49.3% growth rates, respectively. In 2004, color devices generated 1 out of every 10 prints. By 2009, they will produce 1 out of every 3 prints.

U.S. Media Tons Market Forecast: 2004-2009, the fourth in a series of five media forecasts, indicates that cut-size tons accounted for 86% of the business paper market in 2004, and this percentage is expected to increase to 90% by 2009. The rapidly-growing installed base of multifunctional equipment is driving an increasing demand for papers.

The final document in the series is the U.S. Media Revenue Market Forecast: 2004-2009. Total revenues are expected to achieve a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 4.3% between 2004 and 2009. Cut-size revenues accounted for 85% of the business paper market in 2004, and this percentage is expected to rise to 88% by 2009.
