The study reveals that while DPO represents an opportunity for existing service providers, new entrants are delivering a strong threat to established players. While these companies often lack deep expertise within document production, by virtue of their ownership of an entire business process, they have the ability to cut off major document services revenue streams from traditional service providers.

To effectively counter this threat, providers must understand the document business process from end to end, and realistically evaluate capabilities, strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities. DPO service providers must also be able to develop missing capabilities through partnerships or internal growth to offer the breadth of services required for true DPO services.

Other findings of the study include:

• Service providers must be cost-competitive. Know your own costs and establish a healthy margin to deliver your service to the company.
• Vendors must take the lead in accelerating clients’ adoption of true DPO by identifying the opportunity, as well as the “champion” who will drive the initiative on the client side.
• The adoption of DPO is occurring faster in Europe than it is in North America. The most critical factor affecting adoption in North America is the maturity of outsourcing in the United States.

Research for the study consisted of a Web-based survey of nearly 600 professionals, online focus groups, and in-depth phone interviews with over 40 business managers from a variety of functional areas and vertical industries. Research was conducted in the fall of 2005.
