InfoTrends/CAP Ventures 2004 Western European Copying & Printing Placements Report Shows 6.1% Market Growth

(Weymouth, MA) April 19, 2005…The Western European production copying and printing market grew by 6.1% between 2003 and 2004. This growth was driven by a 23.5% year-over-year growth in high-speed copying and a 4.4% increase in Print on Demand (POD) placements.

InfoTrends/CAP Ventures’ new report entitled Western European Production Copying & Printing Placement Summary: 2003-2004 provides a placement summary for 2003 and 2004 for the On Demand, Data Processing, and Production Copying markets. It also includes an overview of the major market trends that are impacting placements. InfoTrends/CAP Ventures will publish its full 2004-2009 Western European Print on Demand Market forecast in June 2005.

The forecast marks the first time that high-speed black & white copier placements into non-staffed environments in Western Europe are covered. InfoTrends/CAP Ventures also presents data on a new category known as Universal Copier/Printers (UCPs).

A few key findings of this forecast include:

  • The total black & white market experienced only moderate growth in 2004, while the mid-range market showed some decline.
  • Although 3-23-ppm Convenience Colour Copier/Printers fared poorly in Print on Demand environments, they proved extremely popular within Corporate/Workgroup environments, increasing at a rate of almost 150%.
  • Colour Print on Demand placements grew at a rate of 5% between 2003 and 2004. Colour copier/printers producing 24+ ppm experienced the highest growth rate.
  • The Netherlandsrepresents the highest growth rates in terms of total POD black & white placements, representing a growth rate of 74%.
  • Italy experienced the most growth in Data Processing printing devices, with a 15% year-over-year gain. The U.K., the Netherlands, and Germany also showed growth, while the markets in France, the Nordic region, and Rest of Europe declined.

“Trends can vary greatly among different European countries in terms of overall POD results and within specific subsegments,” commented Amnon Shalev, Director of InfoTrends/CAP Ventures’ On Demand Printing & Publishing Consulting Service Europe. “These differences reflect specific country issues stemming from socioeconomic trends, the local status of the Graphic Arts industry, and other demand driver differences.”
